Environment was a big issue back in the sixties and seventies. Personally, I was involved in an environmental group in Calgary called Pollution Watch and later on, EcosCalgary. Pollution Watch achieved a landmark in 1969 – the return of the recyclable bottle with a refund was instituted. They thought that stores, especially |Safeway, didn’t want anything to with them; that people weren’t interested in returning bottles. A survey, conducted by Pollution Watch, proved otherwise. Safeway (and other stores followed) began to accept returnable bottles. Interest in saving our environment was at its highest point in the early seventies
